I was going through the rounds the other day and stumbled upon this quote from Premier Wen,
“We’ll never seek economic growth rate and big size at the price of environment,” Mr. Wen told Chinese Internet users in an online chat Sunday in which he disclosed the new target. “That would result in unsustainable growth featuring industrial overcapacity and intensive resource consumption.”
I can’t figure out what these government officials are thinking when they blast us with these flabbergastingly (add that one to your dictionaries) blatant fallacies. The frequency you hear these types of absolutely obvious deceptions to the point they become amusing comments is just so ridiculous I’ve started to wonder what is going through the minds of their PR analysts. Who remembers those god awful 2010 Shanghai World Expo Harmonious Society ads? A couple theories below:
- They think we are all so goddamn stupid and indoctrinated that we don’t see through their crap and accept everything they say Kim Jong-Il style
- They have been exposed to too much of their own propaganda and have started to truly believe their own lies George Bush Jr. style
- They just don’t give a shit Mahmoud Ahmadinejad style
“We’ll never seek economic growth rate and big size at the price of environment,” Word?? Wen, look out your window. See any trees? See any deep blue skies? Have you ever seen a pollution-less sky in any tier one or two city? Have you ever glimpsed a sighting of a wild animal besides birds, pets, livestock, insects or rodents in the so-called countryside? The environmental situation in every city I’ve traveled to can only be described as utterly disastrous. This country is unfortunately at the point of no return. No clean-up job, technology advancements, or economic shift can repair the environmental damage done by the past two decades of the government’s seeking economic growth at any cost development scheme. I’d like one person to take a picture of a clean river in this entire country (outside of Tibet) and send it to the email address provided in the “contact us” section. I’ll dedicate a post to that body of water’s ability to mitigate disaster. Here is a little tidbit about Wen and China’s attempts at green politics:
In 2004, Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, announced that the green GDP index would replace the Chinese GDP index itself as a performance measure for government and party officials at the highest levels. The first green GDP accounting report, for 2004, was published in September 2006. It showed that the financial loss caused by pollution was 511.8 billion yuan ($66.3 billion), or 3.05 percent of the nation’s economy.[2] As an experiment in national accounting, the Green GDP effort collapsed in failure in 2007, when it became clear that the adjustment for environmental damage had reduced the growth rate to politically unacceptable levels, nearly zero in some provinces. In the face of mounting evidence that environmental damage and resource depletion was far more costly than anticipated, the government withdrew its support for the Green GDP methodology and suppressed the 2005 report, which had been due out in March, 2007.
Now don’t mistake the point of this post, I’m not complaining about the state of the Chinese environment, I’m just pointing out the fact that is the deplorable ecological ruin in China and applying it to Wen’s comment concerning the pure intentions of his government’s economic policy. I’m not criticizing these policies either, every government has the right to ruin their country’s environment as they see fit. I’m just pointing out one of the many lies from the nation’s spokesperson, who has a reputation for being the most “transparent” of the group.
This is a pretty broad topic to get into, which I don’t have the time to do the proper research, so if anyone wants to post some good links or facts about blatant full-of-shit comments from the CCP, by my guest.

forces to regain lost territory.
